A New I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER Sequel in Development with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in Talks

Sony Pictures is looking to revive its classic 1997 slasher horror franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer with a new sequel. The project is in development with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson set to direct, and the best part of the news is that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to reprise their roles!

Neal H. Moritz is also in talks to return as producer, with Leah McKendrick on board to write the script. The project is still in early development, so we’ve still got a ways to go before we see anything from it.

I’m not surprised that this is happening, especially with the success of the revival of the Scream franchise. The idea for the sequel came from Robinson and McKendrick, who reportedly “blew away studio execs when they pitched this idea for a sequel last fall especially given the recent success of the Scream franchise.”

The movie is being set up as a “passing of the torch”-type sequel “where original cast members are brought back as a new generation cast members are added to the ensemble, similar to films like Scream or Creed.”

Another big factor in the project moving forward was the recent success of Robinson’s Netflix movie Do Revenge, which was really good!

In the original film, “a year after running over a fisherman and dumping his body in the water, four friends reconvene when Julie (Love Hewitt) receives a frightening letter telling her that their crime was seen. While pursuing who he thinks is responsible for the letter, Barry (Ryan Phillippe) is run over by a man with a meat hook. The bloodletting only increases from there, as the killer with the hook continues to stalk Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Ray (Prinze Jr.).”

There are no plot details to share in regard to the sequel. I enjoyed the original films in the horror franchise and this sequel could be a lot of fun, if the story they’ve come up with is actually good. We’ll just have to wait and see! But, while we wait, what are your thoughts on the news!?
