A Surprising Character Was Revealed in FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD That Connects To HARRY POTTER

Earlier today the final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was released and there was a big and fascinating reveal that you may have missed. There’s a character that was shown that connects to the original Harry Potter stories.

That character is named Nagini and she is played by South Korean actress Claudia Kim (Marco Polo). Just in case you aren’t familiar with the character, she is a circus performer that has a unique power. She’s the snake who years later becomes Lord Voldemort’s malicious and killer serpent and Horcrux.

Up until this point we only knew that the character was called ‘the Maledictus’. A ‘Maledictus’ is a carrier of a blood curse which will ultimately destine them to transform permanently into a beast. In this case a snake.

While talking to EW, Kim explains that Nagini is “far from the villain one might expect from a character who, after all, eventually kills Severus Snape.” She says:

“It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini. You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how her story unfolds and what leads her to the dark side. Kim goes on to talk a little bit more about her character’s power saying:

“She does feel sometimes it’s not controllable. She is bound to [permanently] transform at some point to a beast so she feels this pressure that the clock is ticking.”

She then reveals that Nagini also has other powers that ha ve het to be explored:

“She has powers that are yet to be explored. I can’t confirm she has powers like wizards have. And she doesn’t have a wand.”

Nagini will find a friend Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) in the story, and as you know he’s also an outcst that has some transformation issues. He’s a fugitive on the run in The Crimes of Grindelwald, and “has run off and joined the circus after wrecking havoc in Manhattan in the first film.” When talking about the relationship of these two characters, Kin says:

“Sometimes I introduce myself as ‘Credence’s only friend.' It’s amazing these two broken souls are able to form some kind of friendship within the circus. Credence is special to her because he encourages her to use her power.”

It’s going to be interesting to see how the story arcs of these two characters play out over the course of this film and the rest of the franchise.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opens Nov. 16.
