A24 Confirms BLOODSPORT Remake With Michaela Coel Writing and Directing

There’s no denying that Bloodsport left a serious mark on action cinema. The 1988 martial arts film helped ignite a wave of fight-focused movies in the U.S., while turning Jean-Claude Van Damme into a full-blown star. Now the cult classic is stepping back into the ring, and the team behind it is not what anyone expected.

A new remake is officially in development at A24, and it’s bringing in Michaela Coel to write and direct a complete reimagining of the story.

The original Bloodsport followed Frank Dux, an army captain who goes AWOL to compete in the underground Kumite, a brutal tournament where fighters don’t always make it out alive.

The setup became iconic and inspired countless stories that followed, including franchises like Mortal Kombat. While the film was initially presented as a true story, its real-life connections have been questioned over time, but that hasn’t stopped its legacy from growing.

This new version isn’t just looking to recycle the same beats. Coel’s approach leans into something more personal and intense, focusing on what it actually costs someone to live in that world of combat sports.

“I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity, and isolation the sport demands of them,” Coel said in a statement. “I am excited to explore this world, especially with A24 as my collaborators. LET’S F*CKING GO.”

That quote gives a pretty clear idea of the energy she’s bringing to the project. If you’ve seen her work on I May Destroy You, you already know she doesn’t play it safe, and that makes her a fascinating choice to take on something like Bloodsport.

Producer Marc Toberoff is also leaning into the legacy aspect of the film, saying, “In 1988, the now-iconic Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts, and I look forward to bringing back that high-energy tournament format to the big screen again.”

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first attempt to revive the franchise. There were multiple sequels throughout the ‘90s that didn’t include Van Damme, and Hollywood has kicked around remake ideas for years, including one centered on a war veteran competing in a Brazilian vale tudo circuit. None of those versions stuck.

Coel’s recent slate is stacked with projects that push boundaries. Along with I May Destroy You, she’s got First Day on Earth on the way and will appear alongside Anne Hathaway in Mother Mary, playing a costume designer tied to Hathaway’s pop star character.

She’s building a reputation for telling stories that hit hard and stick with you, and bringing that perspective into a martial arts film could result in something pretty unique.

A24 backing the project only adds to the intrigue. The studio has a track record of giving filmmakers room to take risks, which might be exactly what a Bloodsport remake needs to stand out instead of feeling like a retread.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about the film, but if Coel leans fully into the psychological and emotional side of the savage fight game, we could be looking at a version of Bloodsport that hits in a completely different way.
