A24 Hands THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Reimagining to OBSESSION Director Curry Barker

A24 is stepping into seriously dangerous territory with its new take on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and this latest update adds an interesting twist. The studio has tapped rising filmmaker Curry Barker to direct the project, and it’ll be interesting to see what his vision for the story will be.

If Barker’s name doesn’t ring a bell yet, that’s about to change. His upcoming film Obsession hits theaters on May 15, and it’s already been generating some positice buzz after early screenings at the Fantastic Fest 2025.

The film follows a guy so desperate for love that he makes a supernatural wish to win over his dream girl, only to spiral into something much darker.

That rising momentum makes Barker an interesting pick for the film project, with is “billed by insiders as a ‘reimagining’ of the 1974 horror classic created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel” and that “Barker’s vision for the famed killer Leatherface and the gaggle of young things he terrorizes are under wraps.”

There’s no indication yet of how far this version will stray from the original or what kind of tone Barker plans to bring. He isn’t a Texas native, but his work suggests he understands how to build tension and deliver unsettling ideas, which is exactly what this franchise needs if it’s going to feel fresh again.

Meanwhile, a Texas Chainsaw Massacre TV series is also in development, coming from Glen Powell, Dan Cohen, and director JT Mollner. Variety notes that the show is still moving forward, though there’s no clear connection yet between it and the film.

Barker is also currently working on Anything But Ghosts with Blumhouse Productions, a horror-comedy where he’ll direct, co-write, and star.

The story centers on “two fraudulent paranormal investigators who are forced to face real ghosts—and the lies underpinning their business.”

Revisiting The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is always going to be a risky move. The original still stands as one of the most effective horror films ever made, and every attempt to revisit it carries that weight. But with A24 backing it and Barker stepping in, there’s at least a sense that this won’t be a routine retread.

Whether that’s enough to win over longtime fans is another story. For now, it’s one of those wait-and-see situations.
