A24 Reportedly Locks Down Kane Parsons to Direct BACKROOMS 2
A24 may have found its way back into the Backrooms. After Backrooms became one of 2026’s biggest movie success stories, a sequel felt pretty much inevitable.
Now, Dread Central reports that Kane Parsons has officially signed on to direct Backrooms 2, keeping the 21-year-old filmmaker with A24 for his second feature.
The news comes after months of speculation about where Parsons would land next. A24 reportedly wanted to keep him around for both another Backrooms movie and a separate original project, while Warner Bros. and Universal were also courting the young filmmaker.
Parsons has an unusual amount of leverage in that situation because he owns the Backrooms IP. He wasn't necessarily tied to A24 and could have taken his next movie elsewhere.
If Dread Central's report is accurate, though, he has decided to stick with the studio that helped turn his internet horror creation into a theatrical monster, and they a probably paying way too much money to do it for such a mediocre film.
The first Backrooms has earned $394.1 million worldwide, a pretty incredible haul for a movie born from the eerie online phenomenon Parsons helped popularize with his viral YouTube videos.
The film performed well enough that it received a theatrical re-release featuring additional footage, and it recently made its streaming debut on HBO Max.
A24 and Parsons have reportedly hit a few complications along the way, including rights issues surrounding the larger Backrooms concept, but the partnership has obviously paid off at the box office.
According to Dread Central, A24's official announcement regarding Parsons is “imminent.” A24 hasn't confirmed the report yet, so we're still waiting for the studio to make Backrooms 2 official.
Considering how much money the first movie made, getting Parsons back makes sense. This is his strange little nightmare maze, and if we're heading into those fluorescent yellow halls for another round, maybe he’ll do a better job this time around.
