AVATAR AANG: THE LAST AIRBENDER Director Still Pushing For a Theatrical Release: “This Movie Deserves To Be Seen on a Big Screen!!!”
Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eagerly waiting to see the next chapter of Aang’s story unfold, and the upcoming animated sequel Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is finally finished.
The film recently wrapped production after years of work, but its release path has taken an unexpected turn. While it’s currently set to debut on streaming, director Lauren Montgomery is still hoping audiences will eventually get the chance to experience the movie where she believes it belongs. On the big screen.
Montgomery shared the update on Instagram, confirming that the film is officially complete after an intense multi-year production.
“Aang movie is officially wrapped. We screened the final film for the crew and celebrated the end of a 4 year journey. Now it waits in limbo until its release in October.
“I’ve never worked on an Avatar project that was easy and this was no different. But it was worth it. I’m so proud of everyone who was a part of this and the amazing thing we built together.”
The project has had a winding road to release. The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters in October 2025, then moved to January 2026, and later pushed again to October 2026. Eventually, the theatrical release was scrapped altogether, with Paramount shifting the film to a streaming debut on Paramount+ on October 9, 2026.
Even with the change in plans, Montgomery wants fans to know the decision had nothing to do with the movie’s quality. She made that clear when addressing the situation directly.
"The movie is amazing," added Montgomery, "The recent decision to move us from theatrical to streaming might give the impression that the quality wasn’t sufficient, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. This movie deserves to be seen on a big screen!!! Can’t wait for you all to see it!"
So while the film is currently heading to streaming, it sounds like the creative team still hopes it might find a theatrical window somewhere along the way.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender continues the story of Aang following the events of the original animated series. The film centers on the world’s last Airbender as he fights to protect his culture from extinction before powerful forces can exploit it.
The movie also marks the first feature film coming out of Avatar Studios, the division dedicated to expanding the universe that originally captivated fans during the run of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008.
The voice cast is packed with great talent, including Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten, Román Zaragoza, Steven Yeun, Dave Bautista, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan.
For now, fans can expect to see the movie arrive on Paramount+ this October. But if Montgomery has her way, there’s still a chance Aang’s next adventure could eventually take flight in theaters too. An epic Avatar story on the big screen sounds pretty awesome. That’s how fans were hoiping to experience the film in the first place!
