Aaron Sorkin Will Direct The Steven Spielberg-Produced Film THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7

Steven Spielberg and his Amblin Entertainment have been trying to get their political drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 off the ground and into production for years. The film now has a director, and that director is Aaron Sorkin. Sacha Baron Cohen is also in early talks to star in the movie.

Sorkin made his directorial debut with Molly’s Game, which was an incredibly made movie! I loved that film, so I couldn’t be more happy and excited to see him land this new film project. It’s going to be another perfect project for him to take on.

Sorkin actually wrote the original script for the film when Steven Spielberg was looking at directing it himself. At another point during the development process, Paul Greengrass was attached to direct, but things didn’t end up working out with him.

The film is based on “the infamous 1969 trial of seven defendants charged by the federal government with conspiracy and more, arising from the countercultural protests in Chicago at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The trial transfixed the nation and sparked a conversation about mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government.”

The producing team is looking at bringing together an all-star ensemble cast for the film. Cohen is currently in talks to play Abbie Hoffman, but one of the other actors that was previously approached include Will Smith.

Sorkin has always been an incredible writer and it’s great that he’s now directing. He most recently adapted To Kill A Mockingbird for Broadway, which is set to debut in December.

I’m looking forward to seeing what he ends up doing with The Trial of the Chicago 7.
