ABC Greenlights Scrubs Reboot with Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke Joining Zach Braff
Scrubs is officially scrubbing back in. ABC has given the green light to a Scrubs revival series that brings back Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke in their original roles as J.D., Turk, and Elliot.
They’ll also be executive producing the show alongside series creator Bill Lawrence.
Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra, both writers and producers from the original run, are taking the reins as showrunners for this new chapter.
According to the logline, the new series will “follow JD Dorian (Braff) and Christopher Turk (Faison), who scrub in together for the first time in a long time- medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.”
Lawrence, who’s been teasing the possibility of a reboot for years, finally sees this as the right time—and the right format. “We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo.
“A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot.
“But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it’s a calling.
“There’s no cliché ‘rich doctors playing golf’ — that’s not what it is anymore. So I think that, no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things.”
Lawrence added in a statement this week, “Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together.”
And what about Judy Reyes, who played Sacred Heart’s heart and soul, Nurse Carla? She’s currently a lead on ABC’s High Potential, but sources say there are active scheduling talks happening to make space for her return to Scrubs too.
The original Scrubs aired for nine seasons, seven on NBC and two on ABC, and became a cult favorite for its emotional depth and offbeat comedy.
The reboot will mark ABC’s second new scripted series of the 2025-26 season and is expected to launch midseason.
So, prepare for more heartfelt chaos. The gang is back, and Sacred Heart’s got new interns to break in.
