ABSOLUTE BATMAN Animated Series Officially Announced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation

DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation have officially announced that they're developing an animated adaptation of Absolute Batman, the bestselling comic book series from Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta.

The announcement was made during a joint presentation at the Annecy International Film Festival, where Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register took the stage alongside DC Studios Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn.

Fans of the comic have plenty of reasons to get excited because Snyder isn't just handing the story over to someone else. He'll serve as executive producer and showrunner on the animated series, while Dragotta joins the project as a producer.

The Absolute Batman comic launched in 2024 and quickly became one of DC's biggest success stories in recent years. The series has already sold more than six million copies, with its first collected volume now reaching an incredible 11th printing.

Rather than telling another familiar Batman origin story, Absolute Batman reinvents the Dark Knight from the ground up. Bruce Wayne is reimagined as a working-class hero battling overwhelming odds in a Gotham City dominated by wealth, corruption, and power.

The series centers on the idea that even when the odds seem impossible, one person can still make a difference.

The official description reads: "Reinventing the Batman myth for a new generation of fans, Absolute Batman reimagines the Dark Knight as a working-class hero up against impossible odds on a mission to prove that even in an era of wealth, power and corruption, one good person can change the world."

The comic has earned a massive following thanks to Snyder's fresh take on Bruce Wayne and Dragotta's incredible artwork, so seeing that creative team remain heavily involved with the animated adaptation is pretty cool news.

If the series can capture even a fraction of what made the comic such a hit, Batman fans are in for something pretty awesome.

The Annecy presentation wasn't just about Absolute Batman, either. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation also announced they've officially greenlit an adult animated series titled Joker: Laugh Riot.

Executive produced by Jim Krieg and directed by Yasuhuro Aoki, who previously worked as an animator on ChaO and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, the series puts the Clown Prince of Crime in unfamiliar territory after Batman is murdered.

The official logline reads: "When Batman is murdered, the Joker launches a ruthless crusade through Gotham's underworld to find the killer who took away his greatest adversary.

“But as his violent quest for answers pushes him closer towards vigilante than villain, Joker is forced to confront the truth that without Batman, he doesn't know who he is."

The studios also revealed they're developing an untitled animated series centered on Superman's loyal companion, Krypto.

Executive produced by C.H. Greenblatt, the family-friendly project follows Krypto as he falls in with a neighborhood group of aspiring criminals.

The official description says: "Krypto tags along with a gang of misfit criminal wannabes who live down the block. As he follows them into misadventures and poorly laid plans, Krypto's pure nature slowly ends up redeeming them, whether they want it or not."

As if that wasn't enough DC animation news for one day, attendees at Annecy were also treated to new footage and updates for upcoming seasons of Creature Commandos, Batman: Caped Crusader, My Adventures with Superman, Mister Miracle, DC Super Powers, and Starfire.

DC Studios clearly has big plans for its animated future, but for a lot of fans, Absolute Batman may end up being the announcement that steals the show.

The comic has already proven it can connect with readers in a huge way, and now it'll have the chance to introduce this fresh take on Gotham's Dark Knight to an even bigger audience.
