Adam F. Goldberg Shares New Concept Art for His GOONIES 2 Project and Confirms Pitch Meeting with Richard Donner
Goonies never say die! About six months ago, Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs) shared that he had secretly been writing a script for a sequel to The Goonies. This was right before the pandemic hit, and Goldberg had set up a meeting with original director Richard Donner to make his pitch.
Well, Goldberg has been waiting for the pandemic to pass to make the pitch to Donner in person, but since the pandemic has not passed, he’s decided to move forward with a pitch meeting on Zoom, and he confirmed that in a recent tweet he shared along with an interesting new piece of concept art to check out. He says in the tweet:
“Big news! I tried to wait out this damn pandemic to present Richard Donner THE GOONIES 2 in person… but I caved and set a zoom for for Fri. Never say die, people! The brilliant @MBarnardArt created all of my concept art. I don't want to give too much away but COOL!”

As you can see, the art teases one of the plot aspects of the film. It shows a young girl with the pirate keys to One-Eyed Willy’s treasure standing in front of the iconic bone organ from the original film. But, as you can see, the area has been turned into an attraction of sorts. There’s a sign on a guardrail in front of the girl with a sign that reads “Bone Organ, 1632,” while in the upper right-hand corning there’s a door and a sign above that reads, “Willie’s Wild Water Slide.” Then, of course, there are the handrails for safety.
This is certainly an intriguing element in the story to have turned the Goonies treasure hunt adventure into an attraction. I love that! It’s a fun concept. But we still don’t know what the main aspect of the story will be. I hope that one day we actually get to see it play out on the big screen! Hopefully, Goldberg’s pitch meeting with Donner goes well and that this long-awaited Goonies sequel actually moves forward!
We’ve been hearing for years from director Richard Donnor that there have been talks regarding the sequel, but there’s been no movement.
Steven Spielberg, the film's executive producer, was previously asked about the possibility of the sequel by Josh Gad during The Goonies reunion, and he explained that the creative team revisits the idea of a sequel every so often before they brush it off:
“Chris and Dick and I and Lauren [Shuler Donner] have had a lot of conversations about it, and every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water. The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies we made in the ‘80s.”
Adam Goldberg may have cracked the code! I guess we’ll find out soon!
