Adam Savage Explores the Inner Workings of Luke Skywalker’s Legendary Lightsaber From STAR WARS
If you’ve ever wondered what’s actually inside Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, Adam Savage has a video that’s definitely worth checking out. Savage recently welcomed back Don Bies, former ILM model supervisor and Lucasfilm archivist, to his workshop to examine some incredible physical artifacts from Bies’ Star Wars modelmaking portfolio.
Among the collection was a particularly awesome cutaway version of Luke’s lightsaber that Bies built for the Star Wars Visual Dictionary. The prop offered fans their very first official look at what was supposed to be inside the legendary Jedi weapon’s hilt, giving form to details that had previously existed only in imagination.
One of the coolest things about projects like this is getting a chance to see the hidden craftsmanship that went into creating the galaxy far, far away. Fans spend decades looking at these iconic props on screen, but rarely get the opportunity to explore the intricate design work tucked beneath the surface.
Seeing the internal components of Luke’s lightsaber through Bies’ cutaway model adds a whole new layer of appreciation for the artists and designers who helped build the Star Wars universe.
It’s exactly the kind of fascinating behind-the-scenes detail that makes Savage’s videos so much fun to watch, offering a closer look at pieces of movie history that most fans would never otherwise get to see.
