A&E is Adapting Vampire Drama LET THE RIGHT ONE IN For TV
Tomas Alfredson's 2008 Swedish drama Let The Right One In is a contemplative, moody romance about a boy who falls in love with his neighbor, who happens to be a vampire. It's sweet, charming, bleak, and violent - adjectives that might not sound like they go together, but somehow fit well for this particular story. Released at the start of Twilight fever, this was a refreshing antidote to the idiocy of that franchise. If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend giving it a watch.
And because the entertainment industry is officially out of ideas, A&E is now remaking it for television. THR has the news, which says that Teen Wolf showrunner Jeff Davis and actor/screenwriter Brandon Boyce will be the minds behind this adaptation, which is surprising - I would have pegged former LOST showrunner Carlton Cuse as the brainchild behind this, since he's already producing two remakes - Bates Motel (technically a prequel) and The Returned - for the network.
But here's the thing: this movie has already been remade for American audiences. It was called Let Me In, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves directed it back in 2010. Was it as good as the original? Not quite, but it was pretty solid for a Hollywood-ized adaptation, and I thought the vampire craze was at least temporarily on its way out. I suppose, like one of the plot points in the original movie, Hollywood wants to hang this project by its feet and suck all of the life out of it.
