After Some Amazing Episodes of THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT The Finale Had Some Cool Moments, But Disappointed
The last two amazing episodes of The Book of Boba Fett were really building up to a finale that should have been epically awesome! I didn’t think there was any way they were going to drop the ball with the big finish, but, unfortunately, that’s what happened.
They really tried to go all out with this episode and they wanted to make it big with an action-packed battle sequence, but with Robert Rodriguez directing, that battle ended up being disjointed and lackluster. You know there’s a problem when you’re watching the action unfold and you just keep thinking “when we can just get back to the story and the things that actually made the series interesting.” At least, that was my experience.
The Book of Boba Fett season finale was titled “In the Name of Honor,” and it features all the main players coming together to take down the Pyke Syndicate, which hired Cad Bane to be its enforcer. I was fine with the events and the story beats, but the direction of it all was poorly executed.
One of the most intriguing plot points from Episode 6 of The Book of Boba Fett was seeing Luke Skywalker offer Grugu the choice to train with him to be a Jedi or return to his friend, Mando. Well, I guess being a Jedi wasn’t on his list of priorities. I think most fans expected that to be the direction his story arc would go.
Grogu ends up flying into Tatooine with R2-D2 in Luke's X-Wing so that he could reunite with his friend. He arrives just in time to help Mando in the big climactic battle. In fact, at one point he saves The Mando’s life as he uses The Force to break the giant Scorpenek droid right before it attempted to kill him. This scene was actually kind of silly because The Mando had plenty of time to roll out of the way, but he laid on the ground for far too long just waiting to be killed. Luckily, Grogu was there to save the day from the one time Mando didn’t feel like getting out of the way.
The reunion of Mando and Grogu didn’t really have a big emotional payoff, either. It just felt so forced and rushed and I didn’t really feel the emotion of seeing them back together again. But I did like how they played with them in the end. It would have been interesting to see Luke jump in on the action and help, but I understand why he wasn’t included.
During the battle, we also got to see Boba Fett and Cad Bane face off with each other. This was something I was excited about seeing and during the fight, Bane takes Boba Fett down, and tells him he couldn't escape being a killer because he's too much like his late father, Jango.
Bane says, "Consider this is my final lesson. Look out for yourself. Anything else is weakness." This confirms that the unaired Clone Wars arc where Bane trained Boba as his apprentice is canon, which is pretty cool.
But then, Boba ends up knocking Bane to the ground with his gaffi stick and thrusts it into Bane’s chest. I assume he’s dead, but I hope that’s not the case because Cad Bane is such a badass character and it would be a shame to see him die. But, chances are he’s dead.
I also enjoyed seeing Boba Fett riding on the back of the Rancor during the battle. That’s definitely something that I did with my Star Wars action figures that I had when I was a kid, so seeing that was pretty awesome.
Meanwhile, Fennec hunts down and kills the Pykes' representative on Tatooine, shoots up Jabba The Hutt’s former lieutenants, and strangles the mayor of Mos Espa. Boba has taken control, but I have a feeling that at some point Fennec is going to turn against him. She’s insistent that spice is the way to make money, but Boba shoots it down. They’ve had a few disagreements on how things should be run and I’m sure that’s going to come to a head.
It’s then revealed in the mid-credits scene that Cobb Vanth is alive and in the middle of the healing process in the bacta tank. The marshal of Freetown was gunned down by Cad Bane in the previous episode. Vanth is also being looked over by the Modifier, Thunderbolt, who is the guy who saved Fennec Shand's life through cybernetic enhancements. I assume this means that Cobb will get an enhancement as well. I’m just happy to see that Cobb Vanth is alive. I was expecting something a bit more exciting with the mid-credits scene, though.
At the end of the episode, after the battle is won, Mando and Grogu are shown flying away in the new N-1 starfighter after the battle is won. Grogu fulfilling his destiny by riding in the astromech socket and looking for Mando to take him on a fast ride across the galaxy. We have no idea where they’re going, but we’re gonna eventually find out!
Maybe they’re heading out to help Bo-Katan Kryze in her campaign to retake Mandalore from the Imperial Remnant.
In the end, the episode had some fun and cool moments. But, for the most part, I was disappointed and it was kinda sloppy filmmaking. Many of the big moments and plot points in the series didn’t feel like they came naturally, they felt forced. I don’t know, but all three of the episodes that Rodriguez directed in the series were the worst ones. That’s a shame.
