After Six Seasons Comedy Central Is Bringing DRUNK HISTORY to an End
After six seasons Comedy Central is bringing an end to its hilarious comedy series Drunk History. What sucks, is that this news comes after the Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner series was renewed for a seventh season last summer.
The seventh season of Drunk History was in pre-production and taping some of the comedian narrations when the coronavirus pandemic shut it down. That is probably one of the reasons why the series was canceled. That and the high costs of producing the period reenactments of the show.
On top of that, the network has been scaling down its live-action projects in favor of adult animated series. In the past couple of months, the network has announced they are developing reboots of Beavis and Butt-Head and The Ren & Stimpy Show as well as the Daria spinoff Jodie.
Drunk History started out as a web series on YouTube before moving over to Funny or Die. The concept for the series entailed “an inebriated narrator, often a burgeoning comedian or UCB sketch artist, who regales an obscure historical tale which is then reenacted by famous stars. As far as reenactments, the series attracted a laundry list of guests including Tiffany Haddish, Winona Ryder, Maya Rudolph, Seth Rogen, Kirsten Dunst, Will Ferrell, Tessa Thompson, Vanessa Hudgens, Colin Hanks, Quest Love and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the latter who did an episode devoted to Alexander Hamilton.”
The sixth and final season wrapped on August 6th, 2019, and it’s up for three Emmy nominations including Outstanding Variety Sketch series, as well as Outstanding Costumes and Production Design for a Reality/Variety/Competition series.
This show always managed to entertain and deliver some ridiculous silly comedy. It’s a shame to hear that it got canceled.
