Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson Says His Live-Action Remake of Disney's ARISTOCATS is Not Moving Forward
Disney’s live-action remakes have had hit and miss reactions. Some have been enjoyable, while others have been boring rehashes, and for a bit, it seemed as though the studio was going to just remake every animated feature they’d ever done.
But they took stock after the last few flops and have slowed down in their remake plans, putting movies like Tangled on the backburner. Now we have news of another movie that is looking like it won’t get made.
Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, member of the band The Roots, Musical Director for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Academy Award winner for the documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), was lined up to direct the live-action remake of the classic animated musical The Aristocats.
But Thompson explained during an interview this week on Score: The Podcast that this project is no longer moving forward.
“A new administration came in, and then I was like, ‘Okay, well, this is what I plan to do, and dadada, do the song and dance, and here’s some of the music examples, and there’s some team I’m working with dadada.’
And then they had another administration shuffle, and it was like, ‘Okay well. All right.’ And by the third time I was just like, ‘Maybe this isn’t meant for me, because there’s also, at least, like right now, there’s so much options I have in pickings.’”
Questlove said he “would have loved to have done that project,” but he explained that “there’s like 20 others that I can get to… there’s literally four other films. I’ll be working till, you know, 2029, 2030. So, just wasn’t meant to happen. Maybe it’ll happen in the future.”
Music-wise, this would have been a fun project for Questlove to take on. It’s great some great classic tunes that he could have worked with, but Disney really could benefit from pivoting away from remakes and leaning into original content again.
