AI Is Getting Better At Spotting Skin Cancer Than Human Doctors
Most news about AI and robotics as of late has us increasingly worried we'll one day be victims to an robot uprising, although this recent bit of news has given us hope robots will be cool. A recent study that pitted an A.I. against 58 Dermatologists in spotting Melanoma in skin photos has shown a sizable advantage to an A.I. diagnosis.
That said, Engadget's news report shows the Dermatologists were no slouches, as their 86.6% success rate is still pretty good. Of course, in the case of cancer most people would prefer better results than pretty good, which the A.I. delivered with 95% accuracy. Additionally, the Convolutional Neural Network, as it's called, was more successful in spotting benign tumors which would ultimately keep patients from unnecessary surgery.
Obviously more studies will have to be done before hospitals start using A.I.'s to read tests regarding such a dangerous cancer, but the results so far look promising!
