Akiva Goldsman and Legendary TV Are Reviving Irwin Allen’s Classic Sci-Fi Series

Irwin Allen’s classic sci-fi adventures are going to make a comeback thanks to Legendary Television, with Oscar-winning writer and producer Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, Fringe, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) at the helm.

They will be developing fresh takes on Allen’s most iconic TV series: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, and The Time Tunnel.

Goldsman and Legendary are approaching these reboots with a “unified vision,” aiming to modernize the timeless appeal of these shows while tapping into the storytelling success he’s had with Star Trek.

For those unfamiliar with Allen’s work, these series defined 1960s television sci-fi:

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964–1968): A high-tech submarine, the Seaview, embarks on deep-sea missions to uncover mysteries beneath the ocean—though the crew often finds more danger than answers.

Land of the Giants (1968–1970): A spaceship crash-lands on a planet where everything, including its human-like inhabitants, is twelve times larger than life.

The Time Tunnel (1966–1967): Two scientists, caught in the vortex of a secret time travel experiment, find themselves jumping through pivotal moments in history.

Allen was dubbed the "Master of Disaster" for his grand-scale productions, and he also created Lost in Space, which was successfully rebooted by Netflix in recent years.

His work left a lasting mark on science fiction, and now, with Goldsman and Legendary breathing new life into these series, fans can expect updated storytelling that honors the originals while embracing modern sensibilities.

It will be be interesting to see how Goldsman and his team will reintroduce these worlds to today’s audiences.
