ALADDIN Star Mena Massoud Throws Shade at THE LITTLE MERMAID Remake and Then Deactivates His Twitter Account
Aladdin star Mena Massoud recently jumped on social media to throw some shade at Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Now, Aladdin made over $1 billion at the box office worldwide, and while there have been reports of a sequel happening, nothing has been confirmed by Disney. Massoud definitely hasn’t heard anything on his end, and he seems pretty frustrated about it.
Massoud wrote on Twitter (Via Yahoo): "Our film was unique in that audiences went to watch it multiple times. It's the only way we reached the billion-dollar mark with our opening. My guess is TLM doesn't cross the billion mark but will undoubtedly get a sequel."
Not long after he shared that, the actor deactivated his account. I can understand his frustration as he hasn’t really worked since Aladdin was released, so a sequel could really help him out. But, at the same time, the film industry is a beast, and it’s a game that involves a lot of patience. Massoud has got to be careful so that he doesn’t burn any bridges at Disney!
When previously talking about Aladdin 2, Massoud said: "I don't know that there is movement. There was a change with the writers, and they are working on a brand new draft. That's all I know. If Aladdin 2 happens, that's fantastic. I think it should happen. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback Productions, who did the Lego movies and Aladdin, want to make sure they get this right. So if we do see Aladdin 2, it's not going to be based off the animated version at all. This is going to be a brand new original story." Since then, though, the actor has said the sequel is "very unlikely at this point."
As for The Little Mermaid, the film is predicted to bring in $110 million over Memorial Day weekend. It probably won’t do as well as Aladdin, but who knows if it will get a sequel or not. As of right now, very few of Disney's live-action remakes have had a sequel. I believe Maleficent is the only one.
