Alex Garland Is Developing a New Series at FX That is About "Civil Obedience"
Ex Machina and Annihilation filmmaker Alex Garland has got another project that he’s developing as a series for FX. This is in addition to his upcoming sci-fi series Devs, which looks awesome! You can watch the trailer for that here, in case you missed it.
Garland didn’t reveal the title of this news series, but when talking about it recently at TCA, he said, “The next thing I’m going to try to do is another television show with FX. I’m in the process of writing it. I’ve written the first episode and am half way through the second episode. They (FX) haven’t seen anything. When I deliver it, and if they want to make it, then that’s where we’ll be.”
Garland went on to say that the series will be about “civil obedience” and that “it’s in the here and now.” He didn’t offer any story details, but he did expound on his work and the themes that he likes to incorporate into his stories, saying:
“I’m worried about the future. I’m not a pessimist, but an optimist. I do think it’s very clearly the case that technology and technological advances are happening at a rate that we are not able to keep up with. It’s not the first time it’s happened, but I think of the period of time when every society around the world rejected monarchies, and decided to have prime ministers and presidents. Technology doesn’t have checks and balances; it’s not a good thing. With the election, Twitter and the way information gets disseminated in a distorted way…it’s causing problem situations around the world.”
Alex Garland has an interesting vision and viewpoint of the world in the films that he makes; they’ve all turned out great. I dig his storytelling and visual style, and I’ve been looking forward to watching his upcoming show, Devs, along with this new untitled project that he’s working on.
