Alex Kurtzman Talks Future of STAR TREK Franchise and Keeping Things Fresh and New

On the recent episode of Deadline’s podcast Crew Call, Star Trek: Discovery executive producer, writer, and director Alex Kurtzman opened up about the future of all things Star Trek. When asked about walking the fine line of appeasing the die hard fans of the franchise while appealing to new fans, Kurtzman said:

“Render onto Caesar what is Caesar’s, everybody from the older generation should be incorporated into the new generation, there should always be respect for both and yet it always has to forge new ground.”

It’s sounds like he is the right guy for the job. Here’s what he had to say about what he’s working on:

“The plan is multiple shows. It takes really a year from writing to finished product, sort of like animation. I have to plan two or three years out from now.”

And when asked about the highly anticipated series Picard, which is currently shooting in Los Angeles, Kurtzman explained:

“A lot has happened to Jean-Luc Picard in the intervening years. He had to deal with some new things, and some old things. Both things collide together and he’s made choices that he’s not necessarily feeling great about. Something has caused him to leave Star fleet and we will find out a lot more about what happened.”

And the key to the whole thing coming together, Kurtzman says, is having executive producer Patrick Stewart in the writers room alongside them. Kurtzman gushed:

“He knows Jean-Luc Picard more than anybody. We’re reverent of him. His opinion on what happens really matters to us. We couldn’t do this show unless he was happy about it.”

It sounds like the near future of the Star Trek universe has some exciting things to look forward to! Star Trek: Picard is set to air sometime this year. Which project are you most excited about?
