Alexander Skarsgård to Star in the Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Series MURBERBOT
Apple TV+ is producing a new sci-fi series titled Murderbot, which is based on Martha Wells’s award-winning novel series The Murderbot Diaries. The series is being developed by About a Boy creators Chris and Paul Weitz and Paramount Television Studios, and Alexander Skarsgård (The Northman) is set to star in it and produce.
The official description for Murderbot (via Variety) reads as follows: “Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.”
Murderbot received a greenlight a year ago, but everything was delayed due to the Hollywood strikes. Now, with Skarsgård on board, the development of the project is going to get underway. The series will join Apple TV’s other sci-fi projects including Silo, For All Mankind, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Invasion.
The first book in the series is All Systems Red, and the story is set on a distant planet. It follows “a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid -- a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as ‘Murderbot.’ Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.”
This sounds like a great series project that Skarsgard will have some fun with.
