Alison Brie Thinks the Current SCREAM Era Lets Too Many Characters Survive; But Says Killing Dewey Was a Huge Mistake
It’s been over a decade since Alison Brie ran into Ghostface in Scream 4, but she’s still got opinions about where the franchise has gone since. According to her, one of its most shocking kills never should have happened.
Appearing on the Shut Up Evan podcast with her husband and Together co-star Dave Franco, Brie said:
"Can I tell you my problem with the current era of the Scream franchise? Too many people live. The core four needs to die... We should be down to two of the core four."
Franco quickly reminded her, "They did kill Dewey."
Brie’s reaction was instant.
"And that was very sad. That was a mistake. Keep the main three!"
Brie played Rebecca Walters in Scream 4, Sidney Prescott’s (Neve Campbell) no-nonsense assistant whose career ,and life, ended abruptly after a parking garage encounter with Ghostface. That film marked the final Scream directed by the legendary Wes Craven before his passing in 2015.
Dewey Riley, played by David Arquette, met his end in Scream 5, a decision that still doesn’t sit right with many fans. In terms of the surviving “core four,” Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers remain the only original characters still standing… but several characters fromt he franchise are returning from the dead in Scream 7.
As for the new blood from Scream 5 and 6, Tara and Sam Carpenter are technically still alive, though Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera won’t be reprising their roles in the next film. Brie even floated the idea of her own return in Scream 7, teasing that it could happen “in a dream sequence.”
We’ll see who makes it out alive when Scream 7 slashes into theaters on February 27, 2026.
