AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Poster Pays Homage to Classic Comic Cover

Sony has released a new poster for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that pays homage to a classic The Amazing Spider-Man comic book cover by John Romita Sr., which you can see below. The cover was for issue #121, called “Turning Point,” and it evokes a sense of the pressure Spider-Man is under as he tries to balance the various demands of the supporting characters. The poster does the same thing less successfully. I wish they had done something like the opening credits of Spider-Man 2 and illustrated the people, because the head shots on the graphic background make it look like a flier for a seminar. But I do like what they are going for here. It is slightly more ambitious than some recent movie posters

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into theaters on May 2, 2014.

Scroll a little bit carefully, because I’m putting some possible spoiler-ish speculation below the original cover.

Spoilerish observation: The cover of "Turning Point" teases the death of a major character, and the book was the first in the arc called “The Night Gwen Stacy Died,” in which Gwen Stacy, um, died. Given that Emma Stone was spotted on set wearing the outfit Gwen was wearing when she died in the comics, things may not be looking too good for the character in this movie.

Thanks to Comic Book Movie for the posters.
