Amazon Is Bringing LIFE IS STRANGE to TV with a Live-Action Adaptation
The world of Life is Strange is finally making the jump to live-action. Amazon Prime Video has officially greenlit a TV adaptation of the critically acclaimed 2015 adventure game, setting up a new entry in its growing lineup of video game-inspired projects.
The series will be led by Charlie Covell, the writer behind The End of the F**ing World and Kaos, who will serve as showrunner and executive producer. The project is being produced by Story Kitchen, with Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson attached as executive producers. Square Enix, LuckyChap, and Amazon MGM will also produce.
This adaptation has been in the works for nearly a decade. Square Enix first started pursuing a Life is Strange project back in 2016, and Hulu even held the rights at one point in 2017. Now, Amazon has stepped in to finally bring the series to life with a creative team firmly in place.
Story Kitchen expressed their excitement in a statement to Variety:
“Story Kitchen has always believed that ‘Life is Strange’ deserved to be more than just a game—it’s a cultural touchstone. After a decade-long journey, we’re honored to be bringing this beloved story to Amazon MGM alongside our incredible partners at Square Enix, our brilliant showrunner/writer Charlie Covell, and the amazing team at LuckyChap. Together, this thoughtfully assembled dream team is ready to share Life is Strange with the world in an entirely new way!”
Amazon has also released the official logline for the series, confirming that it will directly adapt the first game:
“[The series follows Max,] a photography student, who discovers she can rewind time while saving the life of her childhood best friend, Chloe.
“As she struggles to understand this new skill, the pair investigate the mysterious disappearance of a fellow student, uncovering a dark side to their town that will ultimately force them to make an impossible life or death choice that will impact them forever.”
If season one faithfully adapts the events of the original Life is Strange, the future of the series could branch in several directions. It could continue Max Caulfield’s journey as seen in 2024’s Life is Strange: Double Exposure, or it could pull from the other games in the franchise.
Life is Strange 2 followed brothers Sean and Daniel Diaz, while The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit served as a prologue to their story. Deck Nine Games later introduced a new protagonist, Alex Chen, in Life is Strange: True Colors, after already delivering the prequel Life is Strange: Before the Storm, which explored Chloe Price’s past.
With such a rich library of games and graphic novels, Amazon has plenty of material to build a long-running series. The streamer is quickly becoming a hub for video game adaptations, with Tomb Raider, God of War, Wolfenstein, and Warhammer 40,000 projects also on the way. Meanwhile, season two of Fallout is set to hit later this year.
The Life is Strange series is only just beginning its next chapter, and fans of the franchise will soon get to see these character’s stories brought to life in live action.
