Amazon is Reportedly Spending $1 Billion on a Sci-Fi Series Called THE THREE-BODY PROBLEM

Amazon has got a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline. They've already been delivering great series like Fortitude, Absentia, The Man in High Castle, The Tick, Sneaky Pete and more. They are also producing series for The Lord of the Rings and Conan The Barbarian

Out of all of these things, it seems like their adaptation of the Chinese sci-fi book series The Three-Body Problem is going to be their most ambitious series yet! According to Financial Times, they are looking to spend $1 billion to develop this single show! That's insane! That will make it one of the most expensive series of all time.

The Three-Body Problem was written by Liu Cixin and published in 2008. It's the first in a series that also includes The Dark Forest and Death's End. These three novels have become known as The Remembrance of Earth's Past Trilogy. Here’s the official synopsis for the first book in the trilogy:

Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

That gives us a taste of the epic scope of this story, but will it be worth it for Amazon to spend a billion freaking dollars making it!? They are also spending $500 million on their Lord of the Rings series, which is also a lot of money! They're just throwing money all over the place!

Amazon is still in negotiations for the rights to the book series, which is currently owned by YooZoo Pictures. But, if Amazon is throwing this kind of money around to produce it, I doubt they'll have a problem getting those rights.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I love Amazon Prime so if they want to fork over a billion-dollar sci-fi series for me to watch, I'll gladly do it!

What do you think about Amazon spending $1 billion on this Three-Body Problem series?
