Amazon MGM Cooking Up Animated Clown Comedy FUNNY BUSINESS From COBRA KAI Producers

Amazon MGM Studios is stepping into some seriously strange territory with its latest animated project, Funny Business, a coming-of-age comedy that dives headfirst into a world filled with both hilarious and sinister clowns. Yea, this one could get weird in some fun ways.

The film comes from writing duo Aaron Eisenberg and Will Eisenberg, who are building the story from their own original pitch.

While the studio is keeping specific plot details locked up tight, it’s described as a four-quadrant coming-of-age story set in a bizarre clown-filled universe where humor and danger collide.

I’m just expecting this thing to land anywhere between absurd comedy and chaotic nightmare fuel, which makes it even more interesting.

Backing the project is a team that knows their way around crowd-pleasing entertainment. Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are producing through Counterbalance Entertainment, alongside Chris Viscardi.

This is the creative force behind Cobra Kai, the massively successful continuation of The Karate Kid saga that evolved from a YouTube series into a six-season hit on Netflix with 11 Emmy nominations.

Hurwitz and Schlossberg also have comedy chops from projects like Harold & Kumar, Blockers, and American Reunion, while Heald wrote the Hot Tub Time Machine films.

For the Eisenbergs, Funny Business marks their second collaboration with Amazon MGM and Counterbalance. They previously sold an R-rated family vacation comedy spec titled Sporkinfeesten, which has Bobby Farrelly attached to direct.

The duo has been steadily carving out a niche in offbeat comedy, with credits that include the horror-comedy Cursed Friends, released on Comedy Central in 2022, and the college admissions satire Big Envelopes, an Audible original starring Abbi Jacobson.

On the animation side, Chris Viscardi brings serious experience. A former head of Nickelodeon Animation, his credits include The Loud House Movie, Plankton: The Movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and The Tale of Despereaux.

Right now, Funny Business is still early in development, but the creative team and concept alone make it one to keep an eye on. A coming-of-age story set in a world of funny and evil clowns isn’t exactly standard studio fare, and that’s exactly why it stands out.
