Amazon Officially Announces Series Adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan's Comic PAPER GIRLS
Last year it was reported that Amazon was going to be developing a series based on Brian K. Vaughn’s graphic novel, Paper Girls. The streaming service has now made it official and they sent out a press release announcing the project.
The story is set in 1988 and follows four newspaper delivery girls who end up getting tangled in a conflict between warring factions of time-travelers. Here’s the official synopsis for the series, which is being produced by Legendary Television and Plan B:
Paper Girls follows four young girls who, while out delivering papers on the morning after Halloween in 1988, become unwittingly caught in a conflict between warring factions of time-travelers, sending them on an adventure through time that will save the world. As they travel between our present, the past, and the future — they encounter future versions of themselves and now must choose to embrace or reject their fate.
I’m not familiar with the comic, but that story sure does sound like lot of fun! I’ll definitely be checking out the show when it comes out!
Vaughan and comic artist Cliff Chiang are executive producers on the show. They’ll be joined by executive producers Stephany Folsom (Toy Story 4), Christopher Cantwell, and Christopher C. Rogers (Halt and Catch Fire), who will also serve as co-showrunners. The producers said in a joint statement:
“As huge fans of what Brian and Cliff created in Paper Girls, we couldn’t be more excited by the opportunity to bring this incredible adventure to life. This is a story with so much heart, and so many unique colors and dimensions — our sincere hope is not only to do justice to the source material, but to make Paper Girls unlike anything else currently on TV.”
The comic ran for a total of 30 issues from October 2015 through July 2019 and won several Eisner Awards. It was also shortlisted for the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story.
Are you familiar with this story and excited to see it get a series adaptation?
