Amazon Orders New STARGATE Series From Martin Gero and Opens the Gate for a New Era

A brand new Martin Gero led Stargate series is officially heading to Prime Video, and for longtime fans of the sci-fi franchise, this is huge.

Amazon MGM Studios has given the project a full series order, setting the stage for a fresh chapter that aims to respect everything that came before while pulling the universe into the future.

Amazon clearly sees value in MGM’s long running genre properties, and Stargate was one of the earliest franchises discussed for revival after the company purchased MGM in 2022 for $8.5 billion.

The new series now joins Prime Video’s expanding lineup of MGM based projects that includes Elle, a Legally Blonde prequel led by Reese Witherspoon, Tomb Raider starring Sophie Turner, and Barbershop with Jermaine Fowler. Other MGM titles like Poltergeist are still in development as the studio continues building out familiar brands for streaming.

This new Stargate show brings Martin Gero back to the universe where he got his start. Gero has strong history with the franchise and is stepping in as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

He isn’t alone in steering the ship. He’ll be joined by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures, along with Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who launched the entire franchise with the original 1994 movie.

Franchise vets Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will also contribute as consulting producers, adding even more connective tissue to the legacy.

Gero opened up about returning to Stargate, saying: “Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA.

“I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

If you’re familiar with this universe, you already know that the Stargate is a pretty awesome sci-fi devices. The ring shaped alien artifact can open a stable wormhole, giving humanity instant access to distant worlds, far flung civilizations, and all kinds of cosmic trouble. It makes for some great sci-fi storytelling.

The franchise began with Emmerich’s 1994 feature film Stargate, and it exploded into a massive TV universe. Over the years, fans have gotten Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, the animated Stargate Infinity, and the digital series Stargate Origins. Each chapter expanded the mythology.

Now, with Prime Video backing a full scale revival, this is a great opportunity for the franchise to reestablish itself in modern sci-fi storytelling.

Nick Pepper, Amazon MGM Studios’ Head of US SVOD TV Development, shared the studio’s excitement: “Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos.

“In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”

The greenlight is also one of the first major series orders since Peter Friedlander became Head of Global TV for Amazon MGM Studios. His arrival lines up with a clear push to strengthen Prime Video’s identity through recognizable, fan driven IP.

Gero has been busy himself in recent years, creating and executive producing NBC’s Blindspot and more recently serving as showrunner on both seasons of Quantum Leap. His return to Stargate feels like a full circle moment and an exciting one for fans.

Whether you're a longtime SG-1 diehard or someone discovering Stargate lore for the first time, there’s plenty to be excited about.
