Amazon’s STARGATE Series Reopens the Gate With WandaVision Creator Jac Schaeffer
Amazon’s next shot at bringing Stargate back to TV just got a very interesting new name attached that may get fans a little excited.
After a previous attempt at reviving the beloved sci-fi franchise reportedly fell apart, Amazon MGM is taking another swing at the gate, this time with Jac Schaeffer, the creator of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, stepping into the project.
That is a pretty exciting creative pairing, especially if Amazon is looking for a version of Stargate that can honor the longtime fans while also pulling in a new audience.
As expected, Amazon MGM isn’t giving up on its Stargate revival. Back in November 2025, the studio greenlit a new series from Martin Gero, who has a history with the franchise.
But in June, fans learned that Gero’s version had been scrapped. The reported reason was that Amazon executives were concerned the show might lean too heavily into the existing mythology and not have enough broad appeal for viewers who didn’t already know their way around a Stargate.
Now, Variety reports that Schaeffer is coming aboard the sci-fi project as part of her overall deal with Amazon MGM.
A writers’ room is expected to start up soon, which means this new version is officially moving through the development process.
Schaeffer will executive produce the series alongside Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold, who worked on Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Tory Tunell.
No plot details have been revealed yet, so there isn’t much to dig into on the story side. But based on what reportedly happened with Gero’s version, it seems safe to expect this new take on Stargate to be built with both longtime fans and brand-new viewers in mind.
Stargate has a big mythology and a loyal fanbase that goes back decades.
The original Stargate movie hit theaters in 1994, and Stargate SG-1 launched in 1997 before running for 10 seasons.
The franchise expanded from there with multiple shows, movies, and a whole lot of gate-traveling sci-fi adventure.
The challenge for Amazon MGM is finding a way to make the new series feel accessible without sanding off what made Stargate so awesome and interesting in the first place.
The concept is still works with ancient alien technology, military sci-fi, strange worlds, mythology, adventure, danger, and teams stepping through a portal into the unknown. That’s a playground with tons of potential.
Schaeffer is an intriguing choice because WandaVision proved she can take a familiar property and approach it from an unexpected angle while still making it emotional, strange, and entertaining.
Agatha All Along also showed her continued interest in genre storytelling with personality. If she brings that same creative energy to Stargate, this could turn into something pretty cool.
This franchise has been waiting for a proper return for a long time, and any new version will have to strike the right balance between honoring what came before and giving audiences a fresh reason to step through the gate again.
What do you think of Schaeffer’s involvement in Stargate? Are you excited to see what she comes up with?
