Amblin Is Producing a GOONIES Re-Enactment Drama Series for Fox

If you’re a fan of the classic Steven Spielberg and Richard Donner film The Goonies, there’s an interesting new TV series being developed that will definitely interest you. The untitled series is about a small group of students who set out on a journey to remake The Goonies.

The project is set up at Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and he will be involved as a producer, as will the original director of the film Donner and his wife Lauren Shuler Donner. There has been talk and speculation about a sequel to The Goonies for years, and while that’s likely to never happen, at least we are going to get this series, which is obviously going to be a love letter to the wonderful adventure film.

The project is being developed for Fox by The Bold Type creator Sarah Watson, who is writing the series. Superbad director Greg Mottola will direct and here’s the description of the story that the series will tell:

After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope and ultimately salvation when she agrees to help three students who are pursuing their filmmaking dreams by putting on an impossibly ambitious shot-for-shot remake of one of the student’s favorite movies… The Goonies. Over the course of the season, their passion will inspire a town in desperate need of hope in this love letter to the power of cinema, storytelling and dreams.

This sounds like it’ll be a great show that is inspired by the stories of other young filmmakers who went out to remake their favorite films as kids. I did that kind of stuff with my friends all the time! The most well-known story is the one that followed the group of friends who wanted to make a shot for shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark.  There’s was a documentary for that made titled, Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made.

I love this concept for a series that will pay tribute to The Goonies, and I’m excited to watch it!
