AMC Executive on The Infamous DUNE Popcorn Bucket - "We Would Have Never Created It Knowing It Would Be Celebrated or Mocked”
For a moment, the release of Dune: Part Two was overshadowed by the release of AMC’s infamous Dune sandworm popcorn bucket.
The theater chain was looking to tap into the novelty of the film with collectors, but had they known that people had much more twisted and demented minds than they thought, they would’ve done things differently.
During an interview with Variety, AMC Chief Content Officer Elizabeth Frank talked about the overwhelming response to the sandworm bucket, which even had the cast and crew of the film raising their eyebrows at the wormy tendrils.
She said: “We continue to learn and evolve. We would have never imagined the Dune thing. We would have never created it knowing it would be celebrated or mocked.”
The Dune bucket even got its own SNL skit! But don’t expect the theater chain to lean into making more deranged popcorn buckets in the future to keep the viral trend going.
Frank went on to say: “Some fans are collectors. There’s another group of people who are specific film fans, buying three different Ghostbusters products. It’s all a mix. It’s a material part of our food and beverage business, but it’s not the majority of it. It also makes the movies more fun.”
Adam Savage actually ended up doing something cool with the Sandworm popcorn bucket turning it into an awesome diorama.
