AMC Teams Up With CJ 4DPLEX to Bring ScreenX and 4DX Formats to U.S. Theaters for the First Time

As movie theaters continue looking for ways to reignite excitement and bring audiences back to the cinema, AMC Entertainment has officially teamed up with CJ 4DPLEX, the creators of some of the most immersive cinema tech out there, to bring ScreenX and 4DX to AMC locations in the U.S. for the very first time.

You’ve probably heard of these formats before, maybe even experienced them at Regal, but this is the first time AMC is getting in on the action.

The rollout kicks off this summer with 25 ScreenX theaters and 40 4DX locations launching across AMC and Odeon sites in the U.S. and Europe. If all goes according to plan, the full expansion wraps up by 2027.

For those unfamiliar, ScreenX projects a film not just on the main screen but also on the side walls of the auditorium giving viewers a 270-degree visual experience that essentially drops you right in the middle of the action.

4DX takes it even further, adding synchronized motion seating and effects like wind, water, scent, and even lightning. Basically, it turns your movie into a theme park ride.

AMC CEO Adam Aron shared in a statement: “This partnership with CJ 4DPLEX to bring groundbreaking cinematic experiences SCREENX and 4DX to AMC moviegoers marks another major step forward in our commitment to delivering the most immersive, cutting-edge experiences to our millions of guests worldwide,”

CJ 4DPLEX already has a strong presence overseas and with Regal in the U.S., but this new partnership with AMC marks a serious expansion. Together, they’ll be adding to a global footprint that already includes more than 1,200 premium screens.

Jun Bang, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be in business with the largest exhibitor in the world with one of the largest deals in the history of our company.

“This deal underscores the overwhelming growing popularity of both of our formats globally and serves as a significant milestone as the cinema industry continues to innovate and bring a differentiated entertainment product to moviegoers.”

Don Savant, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX America added: “This partnership comes as we’ve secured our largest film slate ever for both ScreenX and 4DX while simultaneously strengthening our relationships with filmmakers and major studios.”

AMC’s first ScreenX auditoriums will open just in time for summer blockbuster season. The first 4DX locations will follow in the fall. Each ScreenX theater will include luxury recliners, Barco Laser projection, and enhanced surround sound. And with over 430 ScreenX and 780 4DX auditoriums already operating across the globe, it’s clear these formats aren’t just gimmicks—they’re drawing crowds.

Upcoming titles getting the premium format treatment include A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, Thunderbolts, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Ballerina, How to Train Your Dragon, 28 Years Later, F1, Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. So yeah, these aren’t just filler films—major studios are all in.

With CinemaCon right around the corner and the industry craving big wins, AMC and CJ 4DPLEX is timing this just right. Premium experiences continue to overperform at the box office, and this new partnership could be a game changer.
