Universal Pictures is in the process of developing a feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen, and Amy Adams has signed on to star in the film, which will feature an ensemble cast. She joins the previously cast Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever and Amandla Stenberg.

The story follows Hansen, “a high schooler with social anxiety. He unintentionally gets caught up in a lie after the family of a classmate who committed suicide mistakes one of Hansen’s letters for their son’s suicide note.”

Well, that’s sure to make things super awkward. Adams will take on the role of Cynthia Murphy, the mother to the classmate that commits suicide.

Stephen Chbosky (Wonder) will direct the film from a script written by Steven Levenson, who also wrote the book for the stage musical.
