An Alternate Character Was Almost Killed in AVENGERS: ENDGAME and The Writers Explain Why a Character's Death Can't Be Undone

Avengers: Endgame brought us all kinds exciting happy moments as well as tragic sad moments. Beloved characters do die in this movie and if you haven’t see it yet, you might not want to read any further.

During a recent interview with Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely they reveal that they considered killing off another major character instead of the one that was ultimately killed.

In the movie, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) sacrificed herself for the Soul Stone on Vormir. Hawkeye (Jeremey Renner) didn’t make that sacrifice easy for her, but in the end she got her way, and it was really the only way it should have gone down. But, they did discuss killing off Hawkeye!

While talking to the New York Times, McFreely was asked if Clint Barton’s sacrifice was a possible outcome, and he responded with:

“There was, for sure. Jen Underdahl, our visual effects producer, read an outline or draft where Hawkeye goes over. And she goes, ‘Don’t you take this away from her.’ I actually get emotional thinking about it.”

Markus added:

“And it was true, it was him taking the hit for her. It was melodramatic to have him die and not get his family back. And it is only right and proper that she’s done.”

So, if the visual effects supervisor didn’t speak up Hawkeye might have been the one who died! It makes sense for him to live, though, after all, he does have a family that he needs to take care of!

McFeely went on to explain, “Her journey, in our minds, had come to an end if she could get the Avengers back. She comes from such an abusive, terrible, mind-control background, so when she gets to Vormir and she has a chance to get the family back, that’s a thing she would trade for.”

They also say that her death can not be undone, she is gone for good, and he explained that it is because it was part of the “everlasting exchange” for the Soul Stone. SO if you think Black Widow can come back… the answer is no.

The way the scene on Vormir played out, though, was perfectly executed. It was extremely emotional to see Black Widow die because I’m a big fan of that character, but, in the end, it was the right choice and her sacrifice was just as powerful as the sacrifice Tony Stark made.

I’ll be honest, one of my biggest issues of the story is that she didn’t get a joint funeral service with Tony Stark. She deserved it just as much as he did because without her, they wouldn’t have gotten the Soul Stone to pull it off!

Anyway, what did you all think about Black Widow being killed off? Was it the right choice, or do you think they should have gone with Hawkeye?
