Ana de Armas' JOHN WICK Spinoff BALLERINA Brings on PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN Writer Emerald Fennell
Ana de Armas is currently developing her John Wick spin-off movie, titled Ballerina, and she recently revealed that she brought in Promising Young Woman writer and director Emerald Fennell to help write the script.
De Armas told Elle in an interview: "It was really important for me to hire a female writer, because to that point when I got involved in the project, it was only the director, Len Wiseman, and another guy. And I was like, 'That's not going to work.' So I interviewed, like, five or six female writers. We hired Emerald Fennell, which I was so proud of."
According to Variety, Fennell is helping to "punch up" the script, which has been written by John Wick 3 scribe Shay Hatten and the spin-off's director Wiseman. There’s no word on if Fennell will be credited for her work on it, but I’m sure that de Armes will make sure she is. John Wick director Chad Stahelski is on board the project as a producer.
The movie will follow de Armas's young assassin as she seeks revenge against her family's killers. It's unclear if Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as Wick in the movie, but with the film being set in the same universe, there is a chance.
Promising Young Woman was a great movie, so it’s good to see they managed to get some great talent to help develop the script for Ballerina.
On top of Ballerina, John Wick 4 is coming, John Wick 5 has been confirmed, and there’s a spinoff series in the works titled The Continental, which focuses on a young version of Winston Scott, who is being played by Colin Woodell. There’s a lot happening in the John Wick franchise!
