Ana de Armas' Marilyn Monroe Film BLONDE Will Be NC-17
A few years ago it was announced that Ana de Armas was going to play Marilyn Monroe in director Andrew Dominik’s film project Blonde. Dominik is the director behind films like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly, both of which are great films.
Netflix picked up the film and one of the non-negotiable aspects of them picking up the was that it would have to be NC-17. It will be the first NC-17 film made for Netflix. When talking about the rating, the filmmaker said:
"It's a demanding movie. If the audience doesn't like it, that's the fucking audience's problem. It's not running for public office... It's an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it's kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story."
As I always have said, the rating of a film doesn’t make the movie any better. What makes a film good is the story. You could easily make a great Marilyn Monroe film and have it be P-13 or R. Or, I guess, you could throw in an exuberant amount of sex and nudity to get that NC-17 rating. I’m mean, depending on your taste in films, that may be more of a selling point than the story.
Dominik went on to say that he has "nothing but gratitude for Netflix" and their support of the film, even though that do have issues with the content. He added, It's much easier to support stuff when you like it. It's much harder when you don't."
As far as Ana de Armas’ performance goes, he says that there was "work involved" to make her "sound American," he also stressed that de Armas "is fucking amazing — the one thing nobody's going to complain about is [de Armas'] performance."
What do you all think about Blonde being an NC-17 film?
