Anakin Skywalker Force Ghost Concept Art for STAR WAR: THE FORCE AWAKENS
It looks like early on in the development process of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the filmmakers were considering and appearance by Anakin Skywalker’s force ghost. The possibility was real enough to have some concept art created for the character. The art you see here was found in the recently released The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens Book (via MakingStarWars).
I do like that the concept art implements some of the elements of Darth Vader's darkness into Anakin’s look. There have been rumors that Hayden Christensen could reprise his role as Akakin in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII. The fact that this concept art exists tells us that this could very well still be a possibility. If the art was released in this art book, though, then I imagine it’s not the final look that they would use if Johnson does plan on including Anakin’s force ghost in the next movie.
After seeing The Force Awakens and how it ended, it’s not hard to think that Luke has been conversing with the force ghosts of Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin during his stay at the Jedi Temple.
There is some commentary from the artist, Iain Mccaig, and one of the most interesting pieces of information he shares is that when Anakin died, he didn’t fully go to the light side of the force. He explains how Anakin would flow back and forth between both Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, which is incredibly intriguing. Does this mean he could be conversing with Kylo Ren as Vader and talking to Luke and Rey as Anakin? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if they even utilize him! It’d kind of be awesome if they did.
