Andrew Garfield Had Fun Playing with The Press As He Constantly Lied About Being in SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME
I imagined that it was hard for Andrew Garfield to keep getting asked if he was in Spider-Man: No Way Home over and over and over again. Every freakin’ interview he gave, he was asked about it and he just had to hold his ground and keep denying it because, obviously, Marvel swore him to secrecy in the form of contracts.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Garfield talks about his experience of constantly lying to the press and says it was "rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable." In fact, he made a game of it to have some fun. He said:
"It was like this massive game of Werewolf that I was playing with journalists and with people guessing, and it was very fun ... There were moments where I was like, 'God, I hate lying.' I don't like to lie and I'm not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game. And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do.
"I placed myself in that position of, 'Well, what would I want to know? Would I want to be toyed with? Would I want to be lied to? Would I want to be kept on my toes guessing? Would I want to discover it when I went to the theater? Would I want to be guessing, guessing, guessing?'
"I would want the actor to do an incredibly good job at convincing me he wasn't in it. And then I would want to lose my mind in the theater when my instinct was proven right. That's what I would want.”
While it was hard for him, and he’s obviously not a good liar, it’s cool to see that he had some fun with the experience. It must be a relief for him now to talk about it. These days, he seems to be talking about it every chance that he gets and it’s been great getting some insight into his experience with reprising his role as Spider-Man and the future of the character.
I do hope that we get to see more of Garfield’s Spider-Man in the future. We’ll just have to wait and see if Marvel and Sony decide to move forward with something like that.
