Andy Muschietti Still Wants to Make a Massive 6+ Hour Cut of IT Chapters 1 & 2 With Unseen Footage

As It: Welcome to Derry Season 1 wraps up, fans are once again circling back to a long talked about dream project that could redefine the franchise. Director Andy Muschietti still wants to assemble an extended supercut that merges It: Chapter One and It: Chapter Two into one massive viewing experience packed with footage we have never seen.

He shared the idea during an It: Welcome to Derry Reddit AMA when a fan asked, "Mr. Andy Muschietti has previously talked about doing an Extended Cut that merges It and It Chapter Two in one seamless experience with hours of unused footage. Is this Cut still happening?"

Muschietti replied, "Yes, still a big dream of mine. Since we've been involved heavily in this show, we haven't had time to execute it. Crossing fingers."

Muschietti first entered Stephen King territory with 2017’s It before returning to finish the story with It: Chapter Two in 2019. Together, the films adapted King’s iconic novel by splitting the timeline between the Losers Club as kids and their return to Derry 27 years later as adults.

After the sequel’s release, Muschietti floated the idea of combining both films into a single extended cut that would have landed around six and a half hours.

This wasn’t just about stitching the movies together. The supercut would have added never-before-seen footage and scenes that never made it off the page. One of the most talked about deleted moments involved Maturin, the celestial turtle from King’s mythology, appearing in Bill’s basement during the second film.

The ancient cosmic being serves as a counterbalance to entities like Pennywise and appears across multiple King stories. The sequence was ultimately removed because it took place mostly underwater and slowed the pacing.

Fans have gotten a taste of what Muschietti can do when he has more breathing room thanks to Welcome to Derry. Many viewers have praised the series for pushing deeper into the mythology, with one fan saying it includes the "greatest depiction of Pennywise in any media format," a portrayal that some feel goes further than what the films were able to do theatrically.

Even if the supercut never becomes reality, Muschietti’s time in Derry isn’t ending anytime soon. Although It: Welcome to Derry Season 1 concluded recently, plans are already in place for two more seasons, which I can’t wait for!

Season 2 will jump back to 1935, while Season 3 will travel even further into the past to 1908. Season 1 already teased that era, showing when the evil entity first murdered circus clown Bob Grey and adopted the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

Hopefully, Muschietti get to make his It supercut one day! There’s no doubt the fans would love to see it!
