Andy Serkis Confirmed To Return as Alfred in THE BATMAN: PART II

As we all expected, Andy Serkis is officially coming back as Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman: Part II. I don’t know about you, but I already thought he was confirmed to return.

The sequel to The Batman is gearing up to start shooting this June in London, and Serkis’ return locks in one of the more grounded and emotionally layered elements of Matt Reeves’ take on the Dark Knight.

There was some question about whether Serkis could juggle his schedule, especially with him also preparing to direct The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is slated for release on December 17, 2027. But it looks like he’s found a way to make both projects work without having to step away from either.

While promoting his animated film Animal Farm, Serkis gave an update on his involvement. When asked about returning for The Batman: Part II, he said:

“I’m pretty certain it’s all going to work out. Yeah, we’re working on it, but I think it’s all looking good.” That lines up with what’s been reported elsewhere, including the note that he “won’t be joining them immediately,” but “by the end of the year, I will be”.

That timeline suggests Alfred may not be front-and-center at the very start of production, but he’ll definitely have a role to play as the story unfolds. Reeves’ version of Alfred isn’t just a background figure, he’s a critical emotional anchor for Bruce Wayne, played by Robert Pattinson.

Speaking of returns, Pattinson is back under the cowl, with Colin Farrell also stepping back into the role of Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin. The cast is expanding with Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan joining the film, with Stan set to play Harvey Dent.

The first film proved that audiences were ready for a darker, more detective-driven Batman story. The Batman opened to an impressive $134 million domestically and ultimately pulled in $369.8 million in the U.S. and more than $772 million worldwide.

The universe expanded with HBO Max’s The Penguin, which turned into an awards heavyweight, taking home nine Emmys. Cristin Milioti won Outstanding Lead Actress, while Farrell picked up major wins including a Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, and SAG Award for his performance.

With The Batman: Part II moving forward and Serkis back in the mix, the sequel is shaping up to deepen the relationships that made the first film hit so hard.

Alfred isn’t just Bruce’s butler in this world, he’s his moral compass, his connection to humanity, and sometimes the only voice keeping him grounded.
