Andy Serkis Developing a Series Adaptation of THE WICKER MAN

Andy Serkis is set to develop a series adaptation of Robin Hardy’s 1973 horror movie classic The Wicker Man. Serkis will develop the series with producer Jonathan Cavendish and writer Howard Overman (Misfits and War of the Worlds).

The original film starred Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee, and the story follows Police Sergeant Neil Howle, “who journeys by seaplane to the remote Hebridean Island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The devout Christian is dismayed to find the Islanders paying homage to the pagan Celtic gods of their ancestors and all hell breaks loose, ending in tragedy.”

I remember seeing this movie for the first time when I was in high school, and it messed me up! I had never seen anything like that before, and it was one of those first films that opened my eyes to sinister cult stories.

There was a remake of The Wicker Man in 2006 that starred Nicolas Cage, but that was a watered-down version of the original.

I hope that Andy Serkis will do this sister story justice as he develops it as a series.
