Anne Hathaway Performs Haunting Song “Burial” in First Look at A24’s MOTHER MARY

A24 has released a promo video for one of the original songs from Mother Mary, the upcoming film from director David Lowery, and it offers a striking taste of the movie’s music and atmosphere.

The track, titled “Burial,” is performed by Anne Hathaway, who plays the film’s enigmatic pop icon, and the video gives fans an early listen to a song that’s set to appear on the film’s soundtrack when it arrives in April 2026.

The footage leans into the lush visual style Lowery is known for, pairing Hathaway’s performance with a moody, emotionally charged tone that hints at the complicated story unfolding in the film.

The music itself comes from an impressive creative team. “Burial” was written by Charli xcx, Jack Antonoff, Hathaway, and George Daniel, with Antonoff and Charli also handling the film’s original music alongside FKA Twigs, who contributes additional songs. This song sounds a lot like what you would here from the musical artist Poppy.

In the story, Hathaway plays Mother Mary, a fictional global pop superstar preparing for a major comeback. The film centers on her reunion with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel. As they reconnect on the eve of Mary’s return to the stage, old emotions and unresolved tensions resurface.

The film’s logline teases the complicated relationship at its core: “‘We have a connection... and I can't explain it.’ Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance.”

Another ominous line from the film hints that this reunion may not go smoothly: "There may only be one of us left standing when this is over."

Lowery wrote and directed the film, continuing a career that has delivered a range of distinctive projects including Ain't Them Bodies Saints, Pete's Dragon, A Ghost Story, The Old Man & The Gun, The Green Knight, and Peter Pan & Wendy.

The cast around Hathaway and Coel includes Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs.

Between the emotional drama, the pop star setting, and a soundtrack built by Antonoff, Charli xcx, and Twigs, Mother Mary looks like it’s aiming to deliver something visually rich and musically immersive.

A24 will release Mother Mary in select U.S. theaters starting April 17th, 2026.
