Another LORD OF THE RINGS Game is Coming and It's Going To Be a Big Open-World RPG Adventure
Middle-earth is getting another big gaming adventure, and this one will have fans of the franchise paying attention.
Warhorse Studios, the team behind the acclaimed Kingdom Come: Deliverance games, has officially confirmed that it’s developing a brand-new open-world RPG set in the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Rumors had been floating around for months about what the studio’s next move would be, and now we finally know. Players are heading back to Middle-earth.
The announcement came directly from Warhorse Studios on social media, where the developer posted: “You might have heard the rumours, it’s time to reveal what we are working on. An open world Middle-earth RPG. A new Kingdom Come adventure.”
That was followed by another tease that instantly got fans speculating about what kind of story this game could tell: “We’re excited to tell you more when the time is right.”
That’s pretty much all the studio is willing to say for now. There are no details on the setting, timeline, playable characters, combat system, or whether this connects to any previously established Lord of the Rings stories.
But considering Warhorse’s reputation for immersive RPG mechanics and grounded world-building, there’s already a lot of curiosity surrounding what the developer could bring to Tolkien’s universe.
Warhorse earned a strong following with the Kingdom Come: Deliverance franchise thanks to its deep role-playing systems and realistic medieval approach.
The studio’s latest release, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, was met with strong reviews, earned a BAFTA award for Narrative, and even landed a Game of the Year nomination at The Game Awards.
That pedigree makes this Middle-earth project especially interesting. Fans are already wondering whether Warhorse will lean into a realistic RPG style similar to Kingdom Come or embrace something larger and more fantastical for Tolkien’s world.
The reveal also arrives during a major expansion phase for Embracer Group, Warhorse’s parent company. Embracer is currently moving forward with Fellowship Entertainment, a division focused on managing and expanding several major entertainment properties.
Alongside The Lord of the Rings, the company has also mentioned future partnership opportunities involving franchises like Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, Saints Row, Red Faction, Thief, and TimeSplitters.
At the moment, there’s no release window attached to the new Lord of the Rings RPG, and no gameplay footage has been shown. Still, the combination of Middle-earth and the studio behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance already makes this one of the more exciting fantasy game announcements on the horizon.
Now fans just have to wait and see exactly what kind of adventure Warhorse has planned for Middle-earth.
