ANT-MAN 3 Director Says Bill Murray's Character Is a "Crucial Role" in the Movie
Fans are looking forward to the next Marvel movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which will drop in a couple of months, dive deeper into the Quantum Realm than ever before, and see Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and his company go up against their most formidable nemesis yet in Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors).
Also starring in the film are returning cast members Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, aka The Wasp, and Hope’s parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer). They are joined by Kathryn Newton who is taking over the role of Scott’s daughter Cassie, who is older now since the Snap. So we have seen these characters before, even the villainous Kang when he appeared at the end of Loki Season 1, but one character we know nothing about yet is the yet-to-be-named one played by Bill Murray.
In a recent interview with EW, the film’s director Peyton Reed explained just a little bit about Murray’s character, saying:
"Bill Murray plays a character from Janet van Dyne's past. It's a crucial role. A big theme in this movie is the things that parents and kids don't say to each other, the secrets that they keep in families. In the last movie, when Hank and Hope rescue Janet, Evangeline Lilly's character had this idea of: Oh, I'm going to be reunited with my mom, this is going to be great, we're going to talk about everything. But what happens if the other person, in this case Janet, puts up a wall and maybe is not comfortable talking about certain things and doesn't reveal certain things about her past? As we know from great stories, you can put the past behind you, but the past will always find a way to show up again. Bill's character represents that in this movie."
Janet Van Dyne was gone for so long, and fighting for her life in this unusual place. I think it’s natural to think that she may not have been able to share everything she experienced within the Quantum Realm. I think adding this link to her past will be really interesting. I can’t wait to see this movie!
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set to hit theaters on February 17th.
