ANT-MAN: John Slattery Talks About Reprising Howard Stark
We've only seen John Slattery in the Marvel cineverse one time so far and that was in Iron Man 2 as Howard Stark. We've known Slattery will make an appearance in Ant-Man because his name is on the poster and in the trailer. We've heard several rumored reports that we will see a flashback sequence in 1960s Cuba with a young Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). In fact if you look closely parts of the flashback are in the trailer. With Slattery already established as Stark in the time period it only seems natural for them to cross paths.
While promoting the final season of Mad Men, IGN was able to ask Slattery about working on Ant-Man:
“It’s crazy, yeah. It’s the biggest set I’ve ever seen, I think, or I’ve ever been on certainly. It’s just a gigantic room and there’s numbers and girders and you think, is that what green screen looks like? And things change so fast. The way you did special effects last year can be completed [sic] outmoded in three months when they figure out some other way of generating some image. But yeah it certainly has become like it’s an industry. Marvel is just this unbelievable force now.”
Dominic Cooper has played a younger Howard Stark in Captain America and in several episodes of Agent Carter. When Slattery was asked if he has seen Cooper’s take on the character he replied:
“No, I haven’t watched any of it. It took me two years to watch my own [Iron Man 2]. Well no, that’s not true. I’ve seen scenes and I’ve seen him in other things and he’s terrific. I’ve never met him and I’m not a very knowledgeable fan. I’m sure people have, 'How dare he play this when Dominic…?!' I don’t really get into that so much. My participation hasn’t been that involved. I was there for a day and whenever we did Iron Man 2, it was not that much more involved this time.”
Is it just me or can you hear Slattery's voice in your head while reading this? Ant-Man sneaks into theaters July 17th.
