Anthony Mackie Criticizes Marvel Studios For Lack of Diversity on Their Film Crews

Marvel Studios has had a long successful road to get where they are at today. The Infinity Saga is filled to the brim with great Marvel characters and story arcs for them. As you know, Marvel has been making strides to be more diverse with the characters that they bring into the MCU, but it seems like there’s a different story for the crews that are brought together to bring these films to life.

During a recent episode of Variety’s “Actors on Actors”, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie criticized Marvel for their lack of diversity on the crews. While talking to Daveed Diggs, Mackie said:

"When 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' comes out, I'm the lead. When 'Snowpiercer' comes out, you're the lead. We have the power and the ability to ask those questions. It really bothered me that I've done seven Marvel movies where every producer, every director, every stunt person, every costume designer, every PA, every single person has been white."

He went on to address Black Panther and how hiring an almost all-black crew to work on the film is just as racist as anything, saying:

"But then when you do 'Black Panther,' you have a Black director, Black producer, you have a Black costume designer, you have a Black stunt choreographer. And I'm like, that's more racist than anything else. Because if you only can hire the Black people for the Black movie, are you saying they're not good enough when you have a mostly white cast?"

Mackie concluded by saying that Marvel Studios should ultimately "hire the best person for the job. Even if it means we're going to get the best two women, we're going to get the best two men."

The best person for the job. That’s the way it should always be regardless of race or gender. There’s really no reason why these movie crews shouldn’t have a good mix of all kinds of people to work on these movies.

I know you’ve all stayed after the credits in a Marvel movie! You’ve seen how many people it takes to create these movies!
