Antoine Fuqua is Eyeing a SCARFACE Remake For Universal

I've never seen the 1932 version of Scarface, but when I finally saw Brian De Palma's 1983 remake starring Al Pacino, I didn't really understand why it was as hyped as it was. This was the era in which tons of people had that iconic Scarface poster up on their dorm room walls, and the movie had taken on a sort of mythic level of importance among guys of a certain age. Looking back, I'm convinced a lot of people I knew who liked the movie didn't really understand it, and were more like James Franco's Alien from Spring Breakers who buy into the gangster lifestyle and vibe presented in the movie without fully understanding the consequences. It's been more than a decade since I've seen it, so I need to go back and check it out again to see if I missed something.

Today's news may be just what I need to speed that rewatch along, because Deadline reports that director Antoine Fuqua, who has a remake of The Magnificent Seven coming out soon, is negotiating to direct a remake of Scarface for Universal. The new movie will move the story's setting from Miami to present day Los Angeles. Fuqua certainly seems like one of the most obvious choices for this, and again, since I wasn't a fan of the '83 version, I can't say I'm looking forward to this one. Do you think he's the right fit for a modern day remake? Sound off with your own thoughts in the comments below.
