Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz Are Egomaniacal Movie Stars in Trailer for the Comedy OFFICIAL COMPETITION
IFC Films has released an amusing trailer for a new comedy titled Official Competition. The movie stars Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas as two actors with huge egos, who are commissioned by a millionaire to make a movie together. The film is described as a “sharp comedy skewering wealth, art, and pride.”
Here’s the synopsis:
When a billionaire entrepreneur impulsively decides to create an iconic movie, he demands the best. Renowned filmmaker Lola Cuevas (Penélope Cruz) is recruited to mastermind this ambitious endeavour. Completing the all-star team are two actors with enormous talent but even bigger egos: Hollywood heartthrob Félix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and radical theatre actor Iván Torres (Oscar Martínez). Both are legends, but not exactly best friends. Through a series of increasingly eccentric trials set by Lola, Félix and Iván must confront not only each other, but also their own legacies. Who will be left when the cameras finally start rolling?
I’m sure the creative team had a lot of fun poking at this industry that they’ve had a lot of experience in. I can’t help but think that they pulled from some of their experiences in the movie business to make this film.
The movie was directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, and it will debut in at the Cannes Film Festival. It will then be released on June 17th in theaters and August 2nd on VOD.
