Antonio Banderas Joins Nicolas Cage in TRUE DETECTIVE Season 5, Which Begins Filming in 2027

HBO is putting together one hell of a cast for True Detective Season 5, with Antonio Banderas officially joining Nicolas Cage as the two leads of the upcoming crime drama.

Seeing these two actors together in a dark detective story sounds like a pretty solid combination, and Issa López is returning to write and direct the new season.

Production on Season 5 is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the story taking place in Jamaica Bay, New York. That's a major change of scenery from the frozen Alaskan setting of True Detective: Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

Details about the new mystery are still being kept under wraps, but we do know who the two stars will be playing. Banderas has been cast as Rai García, while Cage will portray Henry Logan.

There's no word yet on how their characters are connected or what kind of case they'll be investigating, but both actors have the range to bring some seriously interesting personalities to the series.

López previously took over the anthology with Night Country, which became the most-watched season in the show's history. According to HBO, the fourth season attracted 12.7 million viewers across platforms. That's a pretty impressive achievement for a series that has already featured some incredible talent over the years.

Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective has earned 41 Emmy nominations and six wins throughout its run. Previous seasons have featured Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Mahershala Ali, and Foster, helping establish the show as one of HBO's most recognizable crime dramas.

True Detective will mark only Cage's second leading television role, following his turn in the dark superhero series Spider-Noir. Cage has a knack for playing complicated, unpredictable characters, and pairing him with Banderas in a crime thriller opens up some fun possibilities. Whether their characters are partners, rivals, or something else entirely remains to be seen.

I'm definitely curious to see what López has planned for Cage and Banderas. Both actors can deliver intense performances, and watching them navigate a twisted murder investigation in New York could make for some great television.

With filming scheduled for 2027, HBO hasn't announced a premiere date for True Detective Season 5.
