Apple and Netflix Both Wanted to Buy TOP GUN: MAVERICK But Paramount Refused to Consider Offers

This past year has been a total shakeup in regards to how movies are distributed and watched by fans, as more movies than ever that were meant for the big screen ended up on streaming services, and those that didn’t, ended up with release dates that got put off several times. One of those in the later camp is the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

This is inarguably a film that was made to be seen on the big screen, and those who made it, as well as the studio behind it, are making it clear that there is no price at this point in time that could change that outcome. In a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, “Netflix and Apple both inquired if Paramount Pictures would be willing to sell the highly anticipated sequel Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise, which had been due to open in theaters last summer. Based on the strength of the film’s perceived box-office prospects, the studio refused to consider offers, according to people familiar with the matter. So far, Top Gun: Maverick is set to debut in theaters this July.”

It makes sense that a movie this big, that we have already waited 35 years to see, would hold off a bit longer. It also is a smart move to keep a few big blockbusters at bay to help bring fans back to the theaters when they can more safely be opened and attended. I’m looking forward to getting back to the theater and watching Top Gun: Maverick, as well as the Marvel movies that are in the pipeline.

Top Gun: Maverick is due to hit theaters on July 2nd. What are you most looking forward to seeing on the big screen?
